How Chris Waller and his team keep noses ahead of the pack

A BEEPING red light emerges from the darkness and Chris Waller reacts quickly.

You can sense by his demeanour that it is an important moment of the morning.
"Rangirangdoo approaching the 600 on the course proper," right-hand man Peter Muscutt says.
Binoculars immediately rise to focus on the red light of the jockey's cap that zooms through the mist, and Waller's right arm cocks, grasping a stopwatch.
The Rosehill trainers' hut at 4.37am is quiet at the best of times, but the silence now is profound.
Waller, his assistant trainer Muscutt and fellow staff member Tania Rouse, formerly with Gai Waterhouse and now a helping hand on fast-work mornings, all fix their attention on Rangirangdoo as he thunders down the home straight, finishing his 1200m gallop like a steam train.

"Good judges of pace those track riders," Waller says. "I wanted Rangi to run his last two (furlongs) in 25 seconds and I've got him going 25.4. Not bad when they are galloping on the course proper and the markers are in the middle of the track. Would be just about spot-on if you take that in to account."
The pressure in the air eases as Rangirangdoo completes his final piece of serious work ahead of Saturday's Group 1 $400,000 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).
Waller has 115 horses under his care at Rosehill, with 100 in full work and 15 in quarantine to soon enter training.
They all receive equal opportunity and are treated like a cog in the wheel. Although, it is hard not to notice that this horse means more to the Kiwi, who moved to Sydney in 2000.He has, after all, won a Doncaster Mile, and when returning from serious injury to score an emotional win in the George Ryder Stakes on Golden Slipper day last year, suffered another career-threatening injury.
But there is no time to reflect on what was just witnessed. His time is recorded on the trackwork sheet and the morning rolls on.
"Foreteller is on the course proper, Urban Rocker is on the sand and Disciple the inside grass," Rouse tells Waller as he types away at his laptop. The binoculars once again rise quickly and the stopwatches click away.
There are very few unfamiliar faces on track at 4am, which is why fellow trainer Gerald Ryan immediately spies The Daily Telegraph upon entering the hut.
"What are you doing here?" he asks. "Are you on your way home from a big night out?"
Peter Moody, Black Caviar's trainer, is in town and also drops by to witness his Australian Cup winner Manighar gallop in preparation for the Ranvet. He talks with fellow trainer Tim Martin before disappearing back to the stables soon after.
Jockey Glyn Schofield, fresh from a whirlwind trip to Dubai, wanders in and prepares himself a coffee until Waller calls him up to test one of his charges.
"Give it a good hit-out, let me know what you think," Waller says.
Muscutt chimes in: "He looks a lot more manageable with his balls out (gelded)."
Waller laughs and unclips the walkie-talkie from his hip, placing it on the desk next to his computer and a pile of folders.
"I have five forepersons each controlling 20 horses and they all have a walkie-talkie. I keep mine turned off because there is enough to worry about out here," he says.
The engine room is a well-oiled machine, with Waller pulling the strings via numerous computer programs and excel spreadsheets that accountants would find fascinating.
Preparation is the key, with hours spent in front of his laptop, the driving force behind the morning running as smoothly as possible.
Every trackwork rider knows exactly who they are galloping for the morning when they arrive at 3.45am.
Included on the list are the horses' individual stable numbers, their next race, any gear applied, whether they are working with a partner, the distance of the hit-out and particular training surface.
Waller scrolls between roughly 20 different screens on his computer, which is illuminated by an overhanging book light, and checks daily running costs of his business, vet reports with treatment schedules, race programs, handicappers' ratings and stable rotation.
"There is nothing hi-tech, no new information or any gadgets to train horses," Waller says. "It is just sticking to a routine that other trainers have used for long periods."I like to be very thorough in the way I prepare and then collate information."
Waller has the biggest arsenal in Sydney racing but it wasn't until recently that he trusted his approach to training was correct.
"Winning the Doncaster with Triple Honour proved that what I was doing was right," he said. Each horse is given the same opportunity and if they are good enough, they win races."
