Young Kitchwin Hills based sire Dane Shadow was represented by a smart type at the Rosehill barrier trials on Tuesday morning where the Chris Waller trained colt Shellscrape saluted in the fastest time of the morning.

Second at his only previous public trial when chasing home the highly rated Gai Waterhouse trained colt Turf Express, Shellscrape showed the benefit of that gallop in winning his 900 metre trial by a neck in 54.82 seconds more than a second faster than any other juvenile trial on the morning.

All going well, Shellscrape is expected to make his debut at Randwick on November 22 in the open juvenile event over 1000 metres.

A $40,000 Magic Millions weanling purchase, Shellscrape is the third foal of the winning Snippets mare Kisma, a grand-daughter of Group Three winner Hayley’s Hope.

An impressive individual, the success of Shellscrape inspired Kisma’s owners to return to Dane Shadow and she has a yearling filly by the same sire and is now due to foal to him again.

Dane Shadow (pictured) has had just two runners to date with Hewentwhoosh finishing second at Scone on Tuesday and Shadow Miss chasing home Our Joan of Arc in the Listed AJC Gimcrack Stakes when finishing midfield beaten just over four lengths.

All two year-olds by Dane Shadow are eligible for the Dane Shadow Breeders Bonus Incentive Scheme, which is offered to horses from the first crop of foals sired by Dane Shadow.

A special $500,000 bonus is available for the connections of any Dane Shadow two year-old this season that can win Group One STC Golden Slipper Stakes, 4th April, 2009 Rosehill.

The bonus payment is to be split evenly between trainer, owner and breeder, so there is every incentive for precocious youngsters by Dane Shadow to be out and running.

The Chris Waller-trained Rangirangdoo has made more than a few punters happy by scoring his maiden win in the Lucky Freeway’s Hotel Handicap (1550m) at Canterbury today.

The son of Pentire with two placings for two starts showed just why he was sent out at a $1.75 starting price, unchallenged by the maiden field and greeting the judge two lengths clear.

Early leader Ramani dictated with a slow tempo before Rangirangdoo crossed her at the 800 metre mark and continued to draw away from Sir Wally who clung to the rails for second, while Long Journey Home ran on for third.

“Full credit to Daniel Ganderton for the ride, it was a shuffling race and he hit trouble in the back straight,” Waller said.

“We’ll give him one more run in a midweek before we get serious with him next preparation.”

The placings and margins: Rangirangdoo 58kg ($1.75) (D. Ganderton (a)) defeated Sir Wally 55.5kg ($6.50) (P. Wells (a)) by two lengths with Long Journey Home 56kg ($4) (H. Bowman) a further one and three quarters of a length away in third.

The time and sectionals: The overall time for the race was a class record in 1.33.10 secs and they ran the final 600 metres in 35.42 secs.

Winner’s breeding: A four-year-old gelding by Pentire (GB) x She Wishes (NZ) (Kenfair (NZ)).

What they said: “He’s a lovely horse, lots of ability but he’s still learning,” winning jockey Daniel Ganderton said after the victory.

“Good effort but he’ll shine over further,” said Peter Wells, rider of Sir Wally.

“Fair run,” said Hugh Bowman, rider of Long Journey Home.

“He wasn’t suited by the tempo and he’ll be a better horse given six months,” said Kathy O’Hara, rider of Sherwoods Choice.

The betting: Rangirangoo was the best-backed runner from $1.95 into $1.75 while Jacala was backed from $20 into $15. The on-course market closed at 120 percent.
