Chris Waller News Headlines

15.09.2008, CERISE BACK IN FASHION

THE Ingham family’s famous all-cerise silks will be back in action at the Rosehill barrier trials today.

It will be the first time they have been worn on a racetrack since Bob Ingham sold his Woodlands racing empire to Sheik Mohammed for $500million in May.

Ingham then spent $18million on 24 yearlings at the Australian Easter Yearling Sales to be trained by Chris Waller and raced by his family.

Two of the 24 horses, a cracking $1.7million Encosta De Lago colt named Speedskater and a $525,000 Fastnet Rock filly called Dalleth, will compete in the two-year-old trial this morning.

Trainer Chris Waller said they were both showing signs of ability but was reluctant to nominate them as possible starters in the Breeders Plate or Gimcrack Stakes - the first black-type juvenile races of the season.

“Obviously they are nice horses, they were expensive yearlings, but I don’t want to place any pressure on them,’’ Waller said. “One thing I have learnt with two-year-olds is to take them one step at a time and let them tell me when they are ready.’’

02.09.2008, TRIPLE HONOUR FIGHTING AT RIGHT WEIGHT

Triple Honour is aiming at the Group Two Chelmsford (1600m) after breezing through a 1200m trial.

Having passed his first weight-for-age test with flying colours, Triple Honour has his eyes on the prize in the Chelmsford Stakes.

Following his Premiere Stakes win on August 16, trainer Chris Waller decided to experiment with his gear by taking the blinkers off and he was pleased with what he saw in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on Friday.

Waller opted for the 1200m trial ahead of the Group Two Chelmsford (1600m) rather than another race and said the Doncaster Handicap winner had done enough work to be tuned up for Saturday’s return to racing at Randwick.

“He trialled nicely without the blinkers and did what I wanted,” Waller said.

“He’s a very clean winded horse and the 1200 metres of the trial is just what I wanted ahead of the Chelmsford.

“He wanted to lay in again but straightened up right away and Glen (Boss) was happy.”

Triple Honour is currently the second favourite behind Racing To Win for the Epsom Hcp (1600m) on October 4 but neither horse is assured of lining up.

Racing To Win’s trainer John O’Shea has warned the star middle distance runner won’t start if he gets more than 59 kilos which seems likely while Triple Honour could be steered away from the race with the Cox Plate now looming as a target.

The weight-for-age George Main Stakes (1600m) on September 27 could be the watershed race for both horses.

“It’s still too far out to make a decision on the Epsom,” Waller said.

“The George Main might be the test.”

Racing To Win may also have another crack at the Cox Plate in which he started favourite two years ago and ran the worst race of his career.

He was found to have muscle soreness in his back afterwards and spent a year on the sidelines.

He claimed his fifth Group One victory in the All-Aged Stakes during the autumn and won the Warwick Stakes at his first start this campaign.

The Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin in December is among the options for Racing To Win.

He would have to leave for Hong Kong from Melbourne prompting O’Shea to give the Cox Plate serious thought.

Racing To Win’s lead up to the George Main is scheduled to be the Theo Marks Stakes on September 13.
