San Domenico rounds off great day for Waller

Trainer Chris Waller has had a memorable day at Randwick with a winning treble finished off by a strong victory to Shellscrape in the Group III San Domenico Stakes on Saturday.

Waller’s day started with Voice Coach recording his third straight win before Altered Boy and Shellscrape continued the theme with their third consecutive victories.

Shellscape’s performance had his trainer praising the colt’s toughness after racing in Brisbane during the winter carnival.

“He had a lot of starts as a two-year-old and he keeps getting better,” Waller said.

“Nothing fazes him.”

Showing his a customary speed, Shellscrape raced up on the pace before powering clear in the straight to win in comprehensive fashion.

“He is a smart horse and has done a great job,” Waller said.

“He’s got a great constitution, a delight to train.”

Waller said Shellscrape would have his next start in a fortnight in the Group II Up and Coming Stakes at Randwick on August 22.

“The Up And Coming is set weights so he’s going to be well in considering he gave them all weight today.”

Confirming the quality of the Queensland winter carnival form were the two placegetters Sniplaz and Kiss Me Katy who filled the placings.

Waller eyes rich pickings

LAST year’s Doncaster Mile winner Triple Honour returns to racing in Saturday’s Premiere Stakes at Rosehill, with the gelding out to defend his title in the race that features Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready.

Triple Honour’s trainer Chris Waller said yesterday his charge was making a ‘’low-key’’ return with the premiership-leading horseman not having any major plans this spring for his group 1-winning star.

’’He’s come back well from his spell but this year it won’t be about targeting group 1s with Triple Honour,’’ Waller said. ‘’It will be about adding prizemoney to the bank.

’’If he goes good in group 3s and group 2s then he will get back up to group 1 grade but that isn’t a priority at the moment. We don’t want to put any undue pressure on the horse.

’’Last year he was probably about one length off the top horses in the country and he is a sound horse himself and has the right attitude. He won the Premiere when resuming last year but I’d say the class of field he is up against is a bit stronger this time around so I’ll just be happy to see him run well.’’

Waller scored a winning treble at Randwick at the weekend when Shellscrape won the San Domenico Stakes after Voice Coach and Altered Boy had also won.

Corey Brown, who was aboard Voice Coach and Altered Boy in their wins, takes the ride on Triple Honour.
