PAUL SHAILER (ASSISTANT TRAINER)

Chris credits Assistant Trainer Paul Shailer with playing a huge hand in the continued success of Chris Waller Racing.

A cousin of Stephanie Waller, Paul was formerly a jockey in New Zealand where he rode 122 winners in two seasons and was a leading apprentice until weight got the better of him.

“Paul was a highly promising jockey and rode winners for the biggest stables in New Zealand including Dave O’Sullivan and Noel Eales,” Chris said.

Chris said that with Paul’s ability to handle a horse he is not only a valuable ground staff member and manager of staff but he can also ride a horse in trackwork and know exactly where it is heading.

“He is a great horseman, which was obvious when he was riding in New Zealand,” said Chris.

“He was an accomplished apprentice and I have no doubt that had weight not forced him out then he would be one of the top jockeys in New Zealand right now.

“Instead, he is my right hand man and I am lucky to have him. He can get on a horse on the track and can sort it out within a couple of days. His hands on experience is invaluable.”

When Chris is away from the stables be it for interstate carnivals or overseas Sales Paul takes charge with little changing in the day to day running.

“We are a well oiled team now,” said Chris. “Paul thinks like I do and has the respect of the staff. He is great when dealing with owners as well and I couldn’t wish for a better Assistant Trainer.”
